The Dallas Zoo was founded in 1888 and has changed dramatically since its opening. Starting with enough animals to count on one hand, it moved around the city from City Park to Fair Park, quickly outgrowing every home. It finally found itself in Marshalls Park in 1912, which it has called home since. Over its lifespan, many upgrades and additions were provided to the Dallas Zoo to accommodate its growing size and population. Now home to over 2,000 animals, the Dallas Zoo is one of the best stops to make for a full day of fun.
Events at the Dallas Zoo
The Dallas Zoo is host to a myriad of activities full of family fun.
Every Saturday night during the summer the zoo hosts Safari Night. Tickets to the event are included with zoo admission. This allows you to enjoy spending the day with the over 2,000 animals the Dallas zoo has to offer before attending the event. The beginning of Safari Night includes a 20-minute interactive animal show, followed by a band for a relaxing end to your day.
Wild About Art
Wild about art is for children 5 – 8 years old. During these events, children will get the opportunity to harness their creativity to create their very own animal-related unique artwork. A Dallas Zoo instructor leads the Wild About Art class. Afterward, the children get to attend a special zoo tour which allows them to enjoy safe close-up interactions with some of the animals.
Dollar Day & Getting a Membership at the Zoo
Becoming a Dallas Zoo member comes with its own set of unique benefits. Not only do you get to enjoy free admission and parking, but depending on your membership level, you may get free guest passes, allowing you to bring your friends with you for a visit to the zoo for free!
Membership also grants you free ride tickets, discounts on specific zoo programs, and discounts from the zoo restaurants and gift shops! Membership also gives you access to members-only events, such as breakfast buffets, animal encounters, and special morning visits!
Dollar day is a program the Dallas Zoo operates to show its appreciation to the community. On a Dollar Day, you are entitled to a $1 admission ticket, and also get great deals on food and drinks you buy throughout the zoo! Dollar Days are often planned well in advance. Keep an eye on the Dallas Zoo calendar to stay up to date with the next event.
